This project of Buta Steel Company opened up broad opportunities for economic development

As one of the largest steel companies in Europe, Buta Steel Company LLC keeps on introducing innovations and advanced technologies into production in order to contribute to the world’s economy.  Modernized Buta Steel Company has implemented a unique project for the region.

It is possible to produce a greater number of high–quality products in the shortest time possible with fewer losses at a new generation of Continuous Casting Machine (CCM) with a radius of 10,25 m. The new production line is capable of casting square billets in standard sizes and on order lengths of 6, 9, 12 m, width 125-125 mm and 150-150 mm, and round billets with diameters from 130 to 250 mm depending on the mark of the surplus steel.  The steel content is purified from non–metallic compounds after installing a vacuum degassing system as a continuation of the process. Here, it will be possible to produce higher quality steel for machine–building, military–defense industry, aviation and etc., areas alongside construction. Casting high-density round billets at the plant will also facilitate the production of pipes durable to high depth pressure utilized in the oil production industry in particular.

In general, the commissioning of the new CCM will positively influence production capacity, revenues of the modernized company, and further improvement of the social welfare of its employees. Electromagnetic mixers have been installed at crystallizers designed for round billets to enhance steel dispersive capacity, gain even smaller sizes of crystal grains, and achieve higher quality. This helps the steel to attain an even higher disperse structure when molten metal is cast in copper molds and ensures higher quality.

Further, our production site in Sumgait city has enabled us to produce only seamless pipe size 114 mm out round billet 130 mm until the present, whereas the new CCM will make it possible to produce all marks of pipes up to 219 mm and this means a threefold increase in the production capacity.  The company’s overall export capacity will increase with that. So, while BSC’s monthly production capacity is only 2, 000 metric tons at present, this figure will reach 7-9, 000 tons on average by using the capacity of the new CCM.

It is noteworthy that BSC currently owns 2 melting shops comprising one 60-ton and one 30 tons electric arc furnaces, 3 rolling mill lines, one seamless pipe producing mill line, one spiraled welded pipe producing mill line, and a mini plant producing shaped items, and one oxygen plant.

Buta Steel Company produces high-quality rebar, wire rod, square and round billets, seamless and spiraled welded pipes, including branded shape casts. It is also possible to produce channel, angle, and I-beam.

Please note that BSC products have also been exported to Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Spain, Italy and etc., countries on top of the high demand in the country.

Buta Steel Company (BSC), a leading metallurgy company in Europe, is preparing to implement a startup project in this field for the first time around the world. The project is about the application of artificial intelligence in the production process.

The essence of the innovation is the use of artificial intelligence in the electric arc furnace to melt metal.

Presently, during the melting process, 3-4 buckets are loaded to fill the charge of a 60-ton furnace, depending on the density of the metal. The supply of the bucket to the furnace and the metal melting process are controlled by the steel makers. However, each time, for various reasons, there is a 1-2-minute delay in the process of emptying the bucket and releasing the alloy. A delay means both a loss of electricity in the working process and a production loss due to the fact that no output was carried out at that moment.

With the implementation of the new project, the decision-making process for metal smelting will be carried out not by humans, but by artificial intelligence. The necessary parameters and data associated with both the release of the alloy, the addition of alloying elements, and other necessary processes, will be entered into the computer memory, and the process will be automatically regulated. That is, the human factor will be minimized and steelmakers will only control the process. In the event of a delay, the system will immediately alert and take appropriate action. According to initial estimates, if this startup is implemented, the plant operating 24 hours a day will increase its profits by saving millions of manats a year.

After patenting, on the basis of copyright, other global companies working in the field of metallurgy can also acquire this startup in order to optimize the process. There are already foreign companies interested in the project.

Buta Steel Company (BSC) has achieved significant success in a number of areas in the past nine months of 2021, despite the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic. These successes are reflected in production and financial indicators.

Compared to the corresponding period of 2020, there was a significant increase in both production and sales of products at BSC. Thus, steel production rose by 15%, armature by 4%, steel wire by 40%, and pipe by 14%.

Sales revenues in January-September 2020 amounted to AZN 134,499,671 (excluding VAT) and in the corresponding period of 2021 – AZN 206,662,36 (excluding VAT), growing by 54%.

At the same time, Buta Steel Company’s profit, profit margin, net profit, as well as EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) increased.

While BSC ended the same period last year with about AZN 475,669 in EBITDA, in 2021, this figure rose more than 138 times to AZN 65,839,488. In the first nine months of last year, EBITDA was 0.35% of total sales, but this year it has risen sharply to 31.85%. During the reporting period, the company’s total profit is up AZN 68,137,278 compared to the same period last year. In other words, the company ended January-September 2021 with AZN 55,675,110 in profit, while it ended the previous year with a loss of AZN 12,462,168. At the same time, the company’s free funds were raised due to gains.

These and other indicators were achieved as a result of optimal management of the assets of Buta Steel Company.

BSC management is currently working on new ideas and significant projects to make the company more successful.

The positive dynamics began to be observed in the company’s activities after the management of the Buta Steel Company was reformed in February 2021.

In Azerbaijan, only Buta Steel Company LLC received European and American quality certificates in steel production.

The success of Buta Steel Company LLC – the largest metallurgical company in Europe, which pays special attention to the quality of its products, continues spreading overseas. The quality of manufactured products here has already been recognized in developed countries. BSC products have been officially approved as meeting all the requirements and conditions of European and American standards, including German ones, and the company has already obtained certificates of international standards such as ISO, EN, DIN, and ASTM.

A few days ago, Buta Steel Company received certificates of EN 10080:2005, EN 10025-1:2004, and DIN 17100:1980 standards confirming the quality of fittings and square and round billets, and a few months ago – ASTM A615/A615M-20, ASTM A706/ A706M-16, as well as international pipe quality certificates EN 10210-1:2006 and GOST 31446-2017 ( https://butasteel.com/our-achievements/certificates/ ).

Note that BSC is the only European company awarded these certificates.

Last year, the company received the ISO 9001:2015 certificate, which is considered a prestigious quality management system document.

Baku Steel Company has 4 quality control laboratories – chemical and spectral analysis, mechanical testing, and metallography ones, equipped with the latest equipment.

Currently, work is underway to bring the pipe quality in line with the American Petroleum Institute (API) standards. Obtaining this certificate will allow exporting pipes produced by Baku Steel Company not only within the region but also to most countries of the world.

The launch of a new continuous casting machine (CCM) production line next month will allow the company to increase production and produce higher quality, corrosion-resistant steel grades suitable for use in the defense industry, including aviation, as well as billets for the oil sector pipes. Herewith, the supply of products to foreign markets will be expanded. Companies from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and some European countries have already expressed a preliminary interest in purchasing products manufactured here.

Recall that along with great domestic demand, BSC products are exported to Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Spain, Italy, and other countries.
